I had the pleasure of doing a couple of events recently related to pregnancy and nursing: a webinar to lactation consultants on nutrition for nursing, organized by Jennifer Tow, and a podcast interview with Aaron Olson. Aaron has now posted the podcast, “Paul Jaminet on Prenatal Nutrition” on his new site, Natural Birth | Natural Parenting. It’s also on Youtube:
The liver overdosing thing is a fallacy. Liver is a food one cannot overdose on. Same as protein.
Do you recommend intermittent fasting for women who are breastfeeding?
I’m interested in the fasting topic too. What I’m wondering is is it better to include fats during the fasting window, as this would increase nutrition for breastfeeding. Are there downsides to doing this? I think I read somewhere that inducing ketosis is not a good idea in all cases but I can’t find where I read that.
Thank you
Thanks. That was interesting. I try to prepare 1 liver meal per week(i.e. all the meat of one meal is liver- usually chicken liver).
Would this be enough for the quantities you suggest?
Yes, enough. We recommend 1/4 pound liver per person per week, most meals have 1/4 to 1/2 pound meat.
Thank you. I think we actually just eat 250 g (about 1/2 pound) of liver between 4 of us. So perhaps I can still increase the amount.
I have heard that traditionally pregnant women in France I think it was used to have a bit of liver each day. ?
If 50% is the magical amount of fat in a Dorito, what’s the magical amount of salt? 180 mg/oz I guess.
That would be about 25% rda or 1/4 tsp salt per 500 calories. That makes sense.
The creed of all scientists is UNCERTAINTY. It is what has made science so successful for us. In science, absolute certitude is useless.
The Blogosphere desperately expresses certitude where none exists.
Hi Paul!
We were excited to see this post related to pregnancy and after! I haven’t commented in quite a while but have been checking in reading posts and comments occasionally over the past few months.
Can’t wait to listen to the podcast! Don’t know if you covered this there or not, but my question is whether or not you think it might be beneficial to give breastfed newborns a probiotic (one designed for infants at infant dose)? Also, any particular brand or strains recommended?
The reason I ask is that my husband and I were blessed to become pregnant last spring (our first!) and I gave birth to a healthy baby girl at the end of January! Due to being Group B strep positive, I did follow the medical protocol for antibiotics during delivery (since she was born vaginally), though I had very mixed feelings and worries about it and wasn’t sure what to do. First choice would’ve been no antibiotics but hospital protocol plus scary stories of infant deaths from GBS swayed me toward getting the antibiotics. Anyway in my new role as a parent ( 😀 and 😯 ), I now worry about her intestinal tract, whether or not I should give her probiotics drops, especially because of the antibiotics I had during delivery.
Thanks so much for your time as always!
Hope you all are doing well!

Science STILL does not know the origin of life. Science only knows the origin of species.
There is much to learn but we are getting closer.
In science, you come to work everyday trying to prove that your colleagues are wrong. To challenge your views each and every day. That is what science is about.
If you do NOT challenge your beliefs and ideas, you are NEVER learning anything. You’re never questioning yourself.
To ASSUME the answer before you ASK the questions leads you NOWHERE. I see this all the time on the Internet.
I wanted to hear this video but looks like it’s dissappeared. Is it still available anywhere?
I would also love to hear this. I would really appreciate it if someone can share or point me to a copy.
the link and the video don’t seem to work for me.
